In the early 1980s and before that, asbestos was used in some construction materials, including ceiling tiles, drywall, flooring, insulation. When it was first installed, it was relatively safe; the asbestos fibers stayed intact and the risk of inhaling them was very low. As time goes on, however, building materials tend to become disturbed or damaged. When this damage occurs, the fibers are released into the air, where they can be inhaled and cause serious health problems.
If you have building materials that are in poor shape or if you are ready to renovate, it is vital to find out whether the materials contain asbestos. While you might not be affected by having asbestos-containing materials in your home while they are in good condition, drilling into them or otherwise disturbing them puts you at risk of developing serious lung and heart issues.
