Lead and Asbestos Removal Process

At Standard Restoration, we first test the home for lead and asbestos. If it is found and it needs to be removed, we use special containment methods to make sure the dust or fibers do not migrate to other areas of your home. We are certified in removing lead and asbestos, and we can mitigate it safely to keep you and your family safe.

What Is the Danger of Asbestos?

In the early 1980s and before that, asbestos was used in some construction materials, including ceiling tiles, drywall, flooring, insulation. When it was first installed, it was relatively safe; the asbestos fibers stayed intact and the risk of inhaling them was very low. As time goes on, however, building materials tend to become disturbed or damaged. When this damage occurs, the fibers are released into the air, where they can be inhaled and cause serious health problems.

If you have building materials that are in poor shape or if you are ready to renovate, it is vital to find out whether the materials contain asbestos. While you might not be affected by having asbestos-containing materials in your home while they are in good condition, drilling into them or otherwise disturbing them puts you at risk of developing serious lung and heart issues.

What Is the Danger of Lead?

Lead was a component of many paints used in homes prior to 1978. Like asbestos, lead in paint is innocuous until and unless that paint becomes chipped or compromised in some way. If you have old paint in your home that is peeling or chipping away, this presents a potentially hazardous situation. One common way for lead paint dust to get into the air is when old windows that have been painted with lead paint are opened and closed. The paint begins to turn into dust and children and adults can inhale it.

Lead exposure can cause neurological symptoms in children and kidney or heart problems in adults. Young children are often the most seriously impacted; because lead paint tastes sweet, it is not unheard of for little children to eat lead paint chips, leading to severe poisoning.

If you are planning renovations in your older home, it is important that you have lead testing done to determine whether you need lead abatement services.
